Saturday October 17, 2015 thought for the day

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
1-The reality of suffering constitutes the single greatest challenge to the Christian faith-
2-Only in a world where faith is difficult can faith exist-
3-If there is no God, where did we get the standard of goodness by which we judge evil as evil?
4-If death has no meaning then life ultimately has no meaning-
5-God did not create evil, he created the possibility of evil, man actualized that potentiality-

Strange thought-You can't take the wet out of water and still have water-

I'VE LEARNED-God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage-

DID YOU KNOW-In 1989, Pepsi came out with a morning soft drink called Pepsi AM.  It didn't last long on the market-

5 THINGS I WANT TO KNOW
1-The Gospel of Matthew and Luke disagree about 10--12 years on Jesus birth date.  Is it critical?
2-In what city was Jesus born?  Mark and John call Nazareth Jesus' hometown as Jesus does himself.  Matthew and Luke set his birth in Bethlehem.
3-Where was the exact place of Jesus' birth?  Was it a stall with no covering, a feeding lot in the open, or a cave (an early Christian tradition)?
4-The prophet Micah prophesied that a shepherd king, a messiah to lead Israel would come from bethlhem.  Was this Jesus?
5-Why would Jesus say he was from Nazareth if he was born in Bethlehem?

BIBLE TRIVIA-Where is this commonly used phrase found in the Bible?-"Eat, drink, and be merry"
Answer for the day       Ecclesiastes   8:15

SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY     Luke 12:4-7
“I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of people who can kill the body but after that can do nothing more to hurt you. I will show you the one to fear. Fear the one who has the power to kill you and also to throw you into hell. Yes, this is the one you should fear.
“Five sparrows are sold for only two pennies, and God does not forget any of them. But God even knows how many hairs you have on your head. Don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying manFather, You are our spiritual covering as we carry out our duties on this day, for Your eyes are on the righteous. In our interaction with others, in our work responsibilities, our daily commute and family duties there are numerous temptations that seek our allegiance which would make us vacillate in our devotion to You. You know our areas of weakness where we’re vulnerable to the enemy and You desire to strengthen and uphold us, keeping our hearts fully committed to You. Thank You for assuring us that we are never out of Your view nor away from Your loving care. Not only are we within Your view, but we are within Your hearing range for Your ears are attentive to our prayers. Through Christ our Lord we give praise and thanksgiving.  Amen.

TODAY WILL NEVER COME AGAIN. BE A BESSING, BE A FRIEND, ENCOURAGE SOMEONE, TAKE TIME TO CARE. LET YOUR WORDS AND ACTIONS HEAL AND NOT WOUND-

Friday October 16, 2015 thought for the day

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
1-We do not make requests of God because we are righteous but because of his great love and mercy-
2-God answers our prayers based on his goodness not our worthiness-
3-Worship is a voluntary act of gratitude offered by the saved to the savior, by the healed to the healer, and the delivered to the deliverer-
4-God doesn't improve he perfects, he doesn't enhance, he completes-
5-When God sees us, he sees Christ and the perfection paid for by him-

I'VE LEARNED-Sometimes there is no next time, sometimes there are no second chances, sometimes it is now or never-

DID YOU KNOW-The first western consumer product sold in the former Soviet Union was Pepsi Cola-

5 THINGS I WANT TO KNOW
1-Did the Eastern Orthodox Church ever have a split like the Roman Catholic Church and Protestantism did?
2- Matthew dates the birth of Jesus to the time of King Herod and he died in 4 bce, could Jesus have been born around 6bce?
3-Why are there so many conflicting stories of when Jesus birth date was?
4-King Herod is said to have issued a royal order to kill all the Jewish male infants under two in Bethlehem.  When was this ordered?  There appears to be no histrorical record of Herod issuing this order.  Is there anyway to confirm Matthew's story of the massacre?
5-Luke connected the birth of Jesus with a taxation ordered by emperor Augustus.  There is no historical record of such a census of the entire Roman world even took place at this time.  The only census carried out by Quirinius took place in 6bce, ten years after Herod died.  Is it possible that Luke writing his gospel 75 years later simply got his information mixed up?

BIBLE TRIVIA-Where is this commonly used phrase found in the Bible-"A drop in a bucket?"
Answer for today     Isaiah 40:15

SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY    Luke 12:4-7

“Five sparrows are sold for only two pennies, and God does not forget any of them. But God even knows how many hairs you have on your head. Don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying man Father, we’re tempted way too often to behave badly, in big ways and little ways. Grant us a firm resolve to do good whatever the cost. Above all, remind us through Your Holy Spirit, that we choose to do good because it pleases You. May the fulfillment of pleasing You be of much greater importance than pleasing or impressing those among us. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

What you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an inner room will be shouted from the housetops.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying manFather, as I seek You in the morning through prayer and Scripture reading I hear Your personal calling to me through the words of Christ Jesus, “Come, follow me.” Jesus suffered for us, leaving us an example, that we should follow in His steps and walk blamelessly, according to the law of the Lord. You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed so we do well to walk in all Your ways and honor You in the way we live our Christian lives. May we be a sweet smelling fragrance to you as we offer up our lives. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY    Luke 11:52-54

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying manFather, we’re reminded of Your absolute faithfulness as we reflect upon the Israelites journeying in the wilderness. SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY    Luke 11:45-51

46 Jesus answered, “How terrible for you, you experts on the law! You make strict rules that are very hard for people to obey, but you yourselves don’t even try to follow those rules. 47 How terrible for you, because you build tombs for the prophets whom your ancestors killed! 48 And now you show that you approve of what your ancestors did. They killed the prophets, and you build tombs for them! 49 This is why in his wisdom God said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles to them. They will kill some, and they will treat others cruelly.’ 50 So you who live now will be punished for the deaths of all the prophets who were killed since the beginning of the world— 51 from the killing of Abel to the killing of Zechariah,[a] who died between the altar and the Temple. Yes, I tell you that you who are alive now will be punished for them all."

Footnotes:

  1. 11:51 Abel . . . Zechariah In the Hebrew Old Testament, the first and last men to be murdered.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying man Father, I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is salvation to all of us who believe upon Jesus as the Son of God. It’s natural and inviting to join in with a crowd of believers and declare with exuberance our privilege and joy to be a Christian. But when we stand alone against a defiant crowd or are confronted by those who declare evil against the Christian believer it becomes not only a privilege but a grave responsibility and conviction to honor Christ by proclaiming our allegiance in a hostile setting. We pray for those confronted with that choice this very day. We also pray for families and friends who grieve the loss of their loved ones who took a Christian stand by staying true to their Christian faith though it cost them their earthly lives. May these families, all over the world, be consoled by the Scripture in Revelation 2:11 declaring that those faithful unto death will be given “the crown of life”. That is our prayer today that we be found faithful in life and faithful unto death, however that comes to us. In the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior we pray. Amen.

I WISH YOU A DAY FILLED WITH LOVE, LAUGHTER, FORGIVENESS AND THANKSGIVING-

2-Could John, the writer of the book of John, have been an eyewitness to the things he wrote about?
3-If John, the writer of the book of John, was an eye witness to the things he wrote about, why did he wait so long before he wrote about them, late in the first century?
4-Why was the early church so deeply divided over who Jesus was?
5-How can anyone possibly get a true picture of the "historical Jesus" since he left no writings about himself-

BIBLE TRIVIA-Where is this commonly used phrase found in the Bible-"salt of the earth"?
Answer for today         Matthew

SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY     Luke 11:37-44
37 After Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee asked Jesus to eat with him. So Jesus went in and sat at the table. 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he saw that Jesus did not wash his hands[a] before the meal. 39 The Lord said to him, “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil. 40 You foolish people! The same one who made what is outside also made what is inside. 41 So give what is in your dishes to the poor, and then you will be fully clean. 42 How terrible for you Pharisees! You give God one-tenth of even your mint, your rue, and every other plant in your garden. But you fail to be fair to others and to love God. These are the things you should do while continuing to do those other things. 43 How terrible for you Pharisees, because you love to have the most important seats in the synagogues, and you love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces. 44 How terrible for you, because you are like hidden graves, which people walk on without knowing.”

Footnotes:

  1. 11:38 wash his hands This was a Jewish religious custom that the Pharisees thought was very important.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying manFather, in our own lifetime we see the beginning stages of disaster spreading from nation to nation and the mighty storm rising from the ends of the earth. Your Word teaches us to watch for these disastrous signs and how to prepare our hearts, along with those whom we might influence, as we see these things coming to pass. Though Jeremiah gave warning for over 23 years the people would not listen, as in the days of Noah, so we’re reminded that we shouldn’t be surprised when others turn a deaf ear to our message either. Enable us to keep Your truth ever before us so that we are not deterred, distracted, or disheartened although the majority refuse to listen or pay attention. In this lull before the full-blown storm may we not doubt or quibble with Scripture but rather, be still and know that You are God. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying manFather, in this depraved generation, darkness is sweeping across the land. At one time morality and virtuous behavior was applauded, but we now live in a time where good is called evil and evil is called good. Those who uphold Biblical truths are seen as archaic, old-fashioned, unenlightened, and even backward. May we not be confused by where the line crosses Your perfect will for our lives. We know in our hearts that teachings or lifestyles that defy Your holy Word is evil, not good. Enable us to “speak Your Word with great boldness” like Peter on the Day of Pentecost. May we not be intimidated or allow ourselves to be bullied into a position that contradicts that which is revealed in Your Holy Word. We rely on the power of Your Holy Spirit to live out our lives in a way that honors You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

5 THINGS I WANT TO KNOW
1-Many early Christians expected the "second coming" of Jesus to happen any day.  Should we still do that today?
2-Had the letters sent by Paul been kept so that they could be collected and copied?
3-Many of the New Testament books began in the oral tradition by being passed on from generation to generation.  When were they finally written down?
4-Since there are no originals of the epistles and gospels to copy from, how can we be sure the copies are authentic with no copying errors or additions made afterward?
5-There are thousands of hand copied versions of fairly early New Testament documents.  I'm sure they are all not exact duplicates.  So which ones are correct?

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying man Father, help me to store this vital Scripture today; “a righteous man will be remembered forever.” When I’m tempted to compromise my integrity in exchange for ungodly choices may this Scripture ring alarm bells in my heart and mind. Let its truth persuade me to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions so that I can live a self-controlled, upright and godly life in this present age, for Your way is the best and lasting way.

So the person has even more trouble than before.”

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying man Father, depending on the state of our hearts we view the Scriptures about death or the return of Your Son in dread, as a warning or as a welcoming. We prepare our hearts by trusting You and asking You for the forgiveness of sins and inviting You to reign in our lives. We pray for those we love that they too will make spiritual preparations for their death or to be ready for the trumpet sound when the dead in Christ rise first and then we who believe will be caught up to meet Jesus in the skies. We have been warned, let us be prepared, and welcome with great anticipation the time when we will transition or at the second coming of our Lord.  We lift up our heads as our redemption draws near.  Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying man Father, we know that it’s not the one who runs the swiftest, nor the one who runs for just a day, but the one who endures to the end that will be saved. We pray that they will submit their will to Yours, Lord, for it is the only certain hope for today and absolute hope for all eternity. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Praying manFather, when we begin our journey with You, we’re uncertain of all that lies ahead. We’re told in Scripture that if we are in Christ old things have passed away, and all things have become new. Keep us steady, trusting, and faithful as we press on in the faith. Through Christ Jesus we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE FOR THE DAY     Luke 11:1-4

Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say:
‘Father, may your name always be kept holy.
May your kingdom come.
Give us the food we need for each day.
Forgive us for our sins,
Because we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us.
And do not cause us to be tempted.’”[a]

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Praying man Father, whether our trials are emotional, physical, spiritual, financial or relational we are absolutely dependent on You for everything that we have need of. When we rely on our own intellect, past experience or natural giftings we miss the opportunity to see Your will perfected in our lives as we work matters out in our own limited strength and faulty wisdom. You work in the supernatural realm while we are confined to the natural unless we welcome Your power to be manifested in our lives. Help us not to resent or be embarrassed by our weaknesses, but to invite Your Holy Spirit power to work through them, so that we can learn endurance, find strength, glorify You, and be an example to others undergoing trial. Amen.
